A family-friendly borough of Düsseldorf and home of the old Zoological Gardens, Düsseltal is an awesome area filled with delicious one-of-a-kind restaurants, local shops, and beautiful city nature. Lotta Leben, an English-speaking expat from Finland residing in Düsseltal/Flingern, Düsseldorf, is sharing her wonderful tips about the best of her neighborhood.

What are the best food spots in your district?

  • Suli’s cafe: Great for breakfast and a nice for a glass of wine outside in the summer
  • Sennhütte: Also a nice location for a glass of wine
  • Banh boyo: A recently new and cool Vietnamese place, nice little dishes for a snack or a big meal
  • Luang prabang: Pricey but worth the money, reserve a table well in advance. Nice cocktails.
  • Okra:  Ethiopian place where you eat with your hands off a plate of sourdough bread.
  • Lotte: Good for some beers outside
  • Hüftgold:  Yummy cake
  • Böser Chinese: Hand-made noodles, a nice atmosphere, and a great takeaway menu

What are the best things to do in Düsseltal?

  • Head to Zoopark for a walk and spend some time with other locals tanning the day  away
  • Wake up late and head to breakfast at Suli’s – a classic Düsseltal thing to do
  • Flingern at Night, an event in May where shops are open all night, the laundry mat is turned into a disco and the roads are closed down for pedestrians to stroll around.
  • Wandering through Ackerstrasse and checking out all the little hipster shops, smoothie bars, and second-hand shops
  • Finally ending up at Cafe Hüftgold for a coffee and piece of cake (which also made the Life in Düsseldorf best “Kaffee und Kuchen” list) and/or ice-cream at Nordmann’s Eisfabrik

What are your favorite shops in Düsseltal?

What types of entertainment are offered in Düsseltal?

  • Düsselstrand: For swimming and sauna – the sauna area was renovated last year and is really nice now, my favorite in Düsseldorf. If you’d like to read up more about swimming in Düsseldorf, click here. If you’d like more information on saunas, click here.
  • Stadtwerke “park”: Just opposite Düsselstrand: free beach volley court, skateboarding, etc.
  • Golden Fass DüsseldorfSports bar with pool tables, darts, and kegel (German bowling)
  • Happy Kids: While there are many amazing child-friendly cafés in the city, Happy Kids is one of the favorites among local parents. They have an indoor and outdoor space and host a number of different classes and courses for the kids in addition to their birthday party packages and daily children’s café.

What are the best “Nature Spots” in your district?

  • Zoopark: Zoopark (hence the name) was originally the location of the zoo. However, after a bombing, the zoo was then remade into a beautiful green space (often called a green lung of the city) and is an amazing and relaxing place to kick back and hang out with friends. There are numerous walking trails and an awesome playground for the kids.
  • Schillerplatz: Schillerplatz is a big playground for kids of all ages, no wonder the parents of Düsseldorf all flock here on beautiful summer days. There is ample space not only to play at the playground but enough green space around to also play a small game of football or frisbee. Schillerplatz is surrounded by beautiful apartment buildings, so there is never a shortage of friends to meet at the playground.
