When the weather is nice and you’re ready to get out of the city to enjoy some fun in the sun and nature, Unterbacher See is a perfect escape… except you don’t need to leave the city to turn off and wind down from the city life.

In addition to a number of other natural spots around Düsseldorf, here are some awesome things you can do while visiting Unterbacher See!

Swim at the North & South Beaches

The beaches at Unterbacher See are open from the beginning of May until the beginning of September daily from 10:00 AM until 8:30 PM. On both sides of the lake, you’ll find sandy beaches, beach chair rentals, beach volleyball courts, showers, toilets, snack bars, and a number of other beach toys and games. If you’re looking for other beach options around the city, we’ve also put together a full guide to lakes and pools in Düsseldorf.

Entrance prices*:

  • Children 5-13: 1,00 Euro
  • Youth: 2,30 Euro
  • Adults (18+): 4,00 Euro

Windsurf, Kitesurf or SUP along the Lake

Surf n’ Kite Düsseldorf is also located along Unterbacher See where you’ll be able to rent surfboards and SUP boards, take classes, or join in on group events. You can also try your luck out at Surf Yoga too!

Test Out Your Skills on a High Ropes Course

The Düsseldorf Hochseilgarten Querfeldein is located right next to the beach and the Surf n’ Kite headquarters (trust me, you won’t miss it). Here, you can host parties and corporate events while testing out your limits on their high ropes course, archery fields, and in canoes on the water.

Camp with your Friends and Family

If you like camping, we’ve also put together a full guide of the best camping locations in and around Düsseldorf, and Unterbacher See is one of those locations. Stretching across 6,5 hectares is the Unterbacher See camping area. Internet and bike and boat rentals are available here.

Have a BBQ Along the Water’s Edge

There aren’t many places in Düsseldorf where grilling is actually legal (you can view the full list here), but Unterbacher See is A-OK! There are 2 different locations along the lake where you can rent a grill station, tables, benches, and terrace space. Depending on how many people you’re inviting to your BBQ party, it will depend on which location is best for you.

It is possible to make a booking online

Rent a Boat for the Day

Unterbacher See rents out a number of different boats for groups of all sizes. One of the best ways to get a couple of hours of pure relaxation is to rent a pedal boat and hang out in the middle of the lake while you get your tan on.

Prices vary depending on what boat you’d like to rent, it’s best to check out their website prices for more information.

Go Fishing on the Lake

You’ll need approval from the owners of the lake before you decide to fling that rod into the lake, but at Unterbacher See you can purchase a day pass, week pass, monthly pass, or annual pass.

Pass Prices*:

  • Day Pass: Adults – 10,00 Euro | Children – 5,00
  • Week Pass: Adults – 20,00 Euro | Children – 15,00
  • Monthly Pass (30 Days): 30,00 Euro
  • Annual Pass: 100,00 Euro

Take a Sailing Lesson

Unterbacher See offers sailing lessons for people of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re looking for a short course that lasts a couple of hours or a full workshop, you can choose from a number of different course options online.

Get Married or Have a Party on the Lake

Believe it or not, Unterbacher See rents out panoramic boats for legal wedding ceremonies and celebrations. While they don’t have much information online about this opportunity, it’s certainly something you can consider. You will need to call in order to get a price list, but there is a bit of information online if you’d like to check out the boat options first.

Go for a Run Around the Lake

It’s beautiful and it’s free, so why not go for a jog around the lake? The entire circuit is about 6 kilometers as you circle around the entire lake. A little forewarning though, when the weather is nice you won’t be the only one on the path as it can get pretty packed with joggers and walkers.

Play a Round of Mini Golf

Unterbacher See mini golf is often open between April and November each year to enjoy a few rounds of putting with your family and friends. If you’re reading this in the winter or simply want to check out another minigolf location in Düsseldorf, you can find some awesome discounts online for your next visit.

Price list*:

  • Kids & Youth: 1,50 Euro
  • Adults: 3,50 Euro

* Prices are always subject to change – we are not to be held responsible if the fees vary. For confirmation of the price, please verify on the Unterbacher See website.

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
