Do I really need a certified translation? Why? What does it cost and where do I get it? I need it immediately! How soon can I get it done?

Questions upon questions, and you might think it is a daunting and expensive bureaucratic procedure. Well, relax, it’s not that complicated, nor expensive, and you can typically get your documents translated in a couple of days if not same-day delivery or next (which will obviously be more expensive) – and – you don’t need to hand over your precious originals, a digital copy is fine!

So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty details, shall we?

Translator or Interpreter? What’s the difference?

Whereas a translator translates written text, an interpreter translates orally. It’s as simple as that. So if you have documents you will consult a translator, on the other hand, if you need someone to accompany you for oral translation (highly recommended for onsite accommodation viewings and accompaniment to the aliens’ office (Ausländeramt) you will consult an interpreter.

A good way to find specific translators or interpreters is via the database of the professional association of interpreters and translators in Germany (BDÜ), which covers a very comprehensive range of languages, including sign language.

This article focuses mainly on translators. Sworn interpreters are generally only needed for court cases, but we hope you won’t need to go to court.

Why do I need a Certified Translation?

A certified translation in Germany is an official translation performed by a sworn translator. These translators have been approved by a German court and are authorized to produce translations that are legally valid. This means they certify that the translation accurately reflects the original document.

You’ll typically need a certified translation for:

  • Visa or residency applications
  • Birth, marriage, or death certificates
  • Academic documents like transcripts or diplomas
  • Driver’s licenses (for exchange programs)
  • Work contracts
  • Legal documents, such as contracts or wills

Without a certified translation, your document may not be accepted by German authorities, so it’s important to ensure you have a reliable and accurate translation.

When Do You Need a Certified Translation in Düsseldorf?

Certain situations make certified translations essential for expats in Düsseldorf. Common cases include:

  • Visa and Residency Applications: If you’re applying for permanent residency, citizenship, or even a student visa, documents like your birth certificate or proof of marriage may need to be translated.
  • Academic Transcripts: If you’re applying to a university or converting foreign qualifications into the German system, certified translations of your academic transcripts or diplomas are required.
  • Driver’s Licenses: A certified translation is often needed when exchanging a foreign driver’s license for a German one, especially if it’s from a non-EU country.

If you find yourself in any of these situations, don’t delay getting your translations ready.

How do I find a translator for certified translations in Düsseldorf?

In order to find a translator for your specific language, you’ll have to consult the public court database and enter your language pair, location, and whether you need an interpreter or a translator (see item 1 above for the difference).

  • First, find out what needs to be translated, always ask this when you consult an official body
  • Then find out if it needs to be certified or not
  • If it needs to be certified, consult the public court database for a local translator or get it done online
  • If not, just browse the web for an online service, there are plenty
  • Then send out a few emails so that you can get a good price and find someone you can trust crucial elements:
  1. Introduce yourself very briefly
  2. Provide a short brief (i.e. the purpose of your translation)
  3. Give a clear indication of your timeline (by when you need the translation)
  4. Provide a digital copy of the document so that the translator can give you a price based on facts
  5. Add any additional information as you see fit
  6. Add your full address, phone number, and name
  7. Wait for replies and select your best service provider
  8. Clarify terms of payment and delivery and confirm the job
  9. Wait for confirmation from the service provider

📌 Life in Düsseldorf Tip: Nowadays, there are also many certified translators you can find online who can translate your documents in less than a day.

What does it cost to get a certified translation in Düsseldorf?

The price of certified translations can vary based on a few factors: the complexity of the document, the length, the language pair, and the translator’s fees. Here’s an overview of typical costs you can expect:

  • Per Word Pricing: Many translators charge per word. In Düsseldorf, rates generally range from €1.50 to €3.00 per word, depending on the complexity of the document.
  • Flat Rates for Common Documents: For simple documents like birth certificates, you may find flat rates ranging from €30 to €70.
  • Additional Fees: Some translators might charge extra for delivery services or urgent processing, so it’s always a good idea to check in advance.

For convenience, Beglaubigung24, an online service based in Germany, offers transparent pricing. After uploading a scan or photo of your document, you can immediately see the price. Certified translations start at 53,90€ for simpler documents, and express options are available.

How Long Does a Certified Translation Take in Düsseldorf?

The time it takes to get a certified translation depends on several factors, including how busy the translator is, the document’s length, and whether you’re using a traditional service or an online provider.

Typically, you can expect a turnaround time of several days to a couple of weeks. It may take longer if you need to send in original documents by mail. However, platforms like Beglaubigung24 often provide faster service, with certified translations completed in as little as 48 hours for common documents, such as driver’s licenses or birth certificates.

If you need the translation quickly, be sure to ask if there’s an express service available.

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
