Along Hüttenstraße, in Düsseldorf Friedrichstadt, a super cool – and huge – graffiti of a kangaroo points you towards the entrance of the Helen Doron English Learning Center.

You’ll often find that we talk a lot about learning German over here on Life in Düsseldorf. After all, many of us here are foreign to the German language as well. However, what we often forget is that despite English being an easier language for many of us to understand when moving to Germany, it isn’t always our mother tongue. That also often means, that our children lose out on the opportunity we once had to learn English as a second or third language. So, if you’re looking for a secret sauce to turn that around, let me tell you a bit about the Helen Doron English Learning Center.

In 1985, linguist, educator, and mother Helen Doron was inspired by the method of violin teacher Dr. Suzuki, based on the principle that all children have a natural gift for music. Under the right conditions, this ability can be nurtured naturally and without pressure to perform. Since language is a form of music, Helen decided to transfer this approach to language teaching. Over 35 years ago, little did she know that this idea would become a worldwide renowned methodology.

Today, you can find Helen Doron learning centers in more than 78 different locations across Germany, 3 of which are located right here in Düsseldorf.

You can find all their Düsseldorf locations here:

  • Hüttenstr. 81, 40215 Düsseldorf (Friedrichstadt)
  • Nikolaus- Knopp- Platz 28, 40549 Düsseldorf (Lörick-Heerdt)
  • Paulistr. 13, 40597 Düsseldorf (Benrath)

In small age-homogeneous groups, babies, toddlers, and children learn English in a lively, entertaining, interactive, and fun way. They also discover important interaction skills, while using their creativity and supporting their emotional and mental well-being. The results are amazing. Parents and children alike are thrilled.

The Helen Doron Friedrichstadt Principles

  1. Fun in learning for ALL types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and later reading/writing)
  2. Small groups with a maximum of 8 participants
  3. Repeated listening thanks to a selection of age and level appropriate stories, songs, and animations they have access to at home
  4. Positive reinforcement throughout the sessions in order to build their self-confidence

There is also a set of courses specifically developed for older children and teenagers, which follow the same principles while incorporating more advanced content and preparing them to boost their confidence and academic skills, which ensure their success at school and after graduation, too.

The school always offers a free trial lesson; this gives the parents a chance to get a personal impression of the experience and the trained teachers an opportunity to assign the right course for each child.

There are also holiday camps offered during the summer, autumn, and spring school holidays.

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
