Love it or hate it, when it comes to being an expat, Facebook is second to none. Unlike its fellow social networks Instagram, TikTok, etc., Facebook has one real power that puts it ahead of the competitors – The Facebook groups. This new generation of forums helps expats around the world to meet people, find jobs, find apartments, ask for advice and the list goes on.

There are countless useful groups for the residence of Düsseldorf and its surroundings and luckily, many of them are in English as well. Want to find hiking buddies? Join events? Get a dog sitter? You can find it all!

Below is a list of my most recommended Facebook groups in Düsseldorf.

Life in Düsseldorf | Local & Expat Community

If you’re looking to make new friends, ask for advice, and connect with not just the expat community but the local community around Düsseldorf, this is the place to be on Facebook. A great group to find answers to all your general questions about the city. At the moment there are about 11k members on it and most questions are replied to quite fast. The ultimate group to get general information and consult with fellow expats. Not to mention, it’s our Life in Düsseldorf group, so we’ve got to be a little biased, right?

Düsseldorf Expat Meetups

One of the best groups for meet ups and events for expats in Düsseldorf is the Düsseldorf Expat Meetups (along with about 15 other awesome meetups as well). The group organizes the renowned Thursday Expat Meet Up at Fatty’s Irish pub and many other events. On top of the events, you can also use the group to ask questions, post flats and jobs, and much more.

Girl Gone International – Düsseldorf

This is the local branch of the famous worldwide women’s network – Girl Gone International.  An amazing group for all-girl matters. Here, ladies can ask all the questions that they feel will not be answered in general groups. In addition to that, the admin organizes events such as drink meets ups, picnics in summer, lectures & workshops, breakfasts, etc. Do you want to be a guest host? You can do that, too! A must group for all female expats.

Düsseldorf Flea Market

Here you’ll find everything second hand being sold at usually awesome prices! The group rules are that the sellers need to post in English, which for expats, makes it particularly easy to spot a great find. If you were hoping to snatch up a few free things… well then keep on reading!

Düsseldorf Pay It Forward – FREE stuff only!

Nothing breaks a heart more than seeing all the good items that people throw away and put on the street during collection days. Many of us are very fortunate to be able to have new things and get rid of the old ones, but why not give them away and make someone happy? Also works for cookie karma points! You can post any sort of item on it or even post a picture of something nice that you see on the street but don’t need yourself.

Sustainable Düsseldorf

Sustainability is a huge subject in recent years and more and more people want to maintain a sustainable lifestyle. However, living in a foreign country and often not knowing the language and local rules, makes this a bit confusing. This group aims to give a platform to help those who are interested in the subject and want to get more information. On Sustainable Düsseldorf, you can ask or post about anything subject related, from local recycling to compost recommendation.

Yes – Your Expat Society

Interested in meeting new people? Then this is a great group for that. The group was founded in 2018 to bring people together and connect individuals. This group is relatively small and consists of 2k members and that actually makes it so cozy and unique. The admins organize various events, such as monthly drinks, summer picnics, and all sorts of gatherings. Interested in organizing an event of your own? No problem, contact the admins for advice and get going. ?

WG & Wohnung Düsseldorf Gesucht

Moving and looking for a place? This is one of the top groups to find accommodation in Düsseldorf and its surroundings. You can post both in German and English. In this group, you can post or search for short/long term, entire apartment, or a room.

Düsseldorf International Family Forum

When you have children and are living in Düsseldorf, it usually comes with a lot of questions! This is the perfect group to find other families to meet up with, ask questions, post about family-friendly events in the city, and much, much more! The group is extremely active which means any pressing questions you have about your family will usually be answered in a matter of minutes.

Electronic Music Expats: Düsseldorf & Cologne

Do you like to party and refuse to go home early? Then this is the perfect community for you. The group was founded in 2019 by a local electronic music enthusiast who wished to connect genre fans, both local and expats. This group organizes various events such as club days, festival trips, get-together drinks, and many more. A perfect group for any electronic music/party/festival fan.

Düsseldorf Travel Community and NRW Hiking Group

We put these two groups together since they are quite similar and serve the same purpose but by joining both of them, you will be able to enjoy all the options. The groups offer organized hikes around NRW and welcome all to join. Some trips are easy and suitable for all levels but some might be for advanced hikers only. This is a great way to enjoy beautiful nature, get fit, and meet like-minded new people.

Neu in Düsseldorf – New in Düsseldorf

A German group for newcomers in Düsseldorf. Most of the posts are in German but English is also accepted. The group has quite a few rules (what a surprise) about the type of posts, so mind that issue. The best thing about it is that they organize an on-street weekly meeting on Ratingerstraße in summer and during winter in changing locations. This is a great group if you’re looking to meet some friendly locals and even improve your German.

English Speaking Dog Owners Düsseldorf/NRW

A great group for all dog owners in Düsseldorf and NRW. In this group, you can seek all the information you need about vets, parks, pet food, petsitters, local pet legislation, etc.

Crazy Excats Düsseldorf

And let us not forget about cat people. Same as the previous group, this is the perfect place to ask questions and seek advice about your beloved kitty.

These are some of the groups that I have found to be very useful and improved my life in Düsseldorf significantly. Remember, that in case there are no groups that suit your preferences, then you can always open one! Düsseldorf has a great, open expat community but also many like-minded locals who would love to take part in your initiative. Good luck and have fun!

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
