  • The Best English Language Movie Theatres in Düsseldorf

[et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]Going to the movie theatres and watching an English movie that is anywhere other than Netflix… now there’s something I haven’t done in a while. How about you?

The thing is, there are actually theatres in Düsseldorf and across Germany that play English movies, I was just too lazy to figure it out earlier. The most important thing to note is that the English (or other languages) movies will have an “OmU” or an “OV” next to their titles.

OV = Original Version

OmU = Original Version with German subtitles

To give you a little bit of a head start, I’ve done the research for you. Here are a few English language movie theatres in the city worth checking out online:

Metropol Kino (TOP EXPAT CHOICE)

Right down the road from the Bilk Arcaden and the ice cream shop is the Metropol Kino. The entrance is small and looks a little old school, but it’s a great place for English speaking Düsseldorfers. There’s quite an array of options for English language movies that you can check out on their website. Almost all movies with (OmU) next to them offer an easy indication to know which ones are currently playing in English with German subtitles.

CineStar Düsseldorf (TOP EXPAT CHOICE)

CineStar Düsseldorf is near Lörick and recommended by many international people around the city. While I couldn’t seem to find an easy search function like UCI KINOWELT, a helpful hint it to simply type OmU or OV in the search box at the top. All of the films offered in their original version (likely English) will be featured here. Additionally, every Wednesday at 8:15 PM CineStar hosts their SNEAK PREVIEW night and plays an English movie that’s not been released yet. Cool, huh?! The twist is that you have no idea what’ll be playing until you’re in the theatre waiting for it to play. It’s also only 5,50 (prices are always subject to change).

UCI KINOWELT Düsseldorf

UCI Kinowelt is quite a large theatre in Düsseldorf located near the Rheinturm and the Media Hafen. There’s also another located directly across the river in Neuss. The great thing about the UCI Kinowelt website is that if you’re lazy and want to avoid scrolling through to find English movies, they offer an easy search tool to navigate your way through the OV and OmU films. Sadly, they don’t often offer English movies, so you’ll be in luck if you do happen to find one.

Alltours Kino

Most of you will know this cinema as Düsseldorf Open Air Kino along the Rhein River. While I cannot confirm when there are features in English, it’s an experience you can’t miss out on! Each summer the selection of films alternates, sometimes you’ll find an English movie or two in the selection.

If you’re all out of ideas and want to try out a couple more options, here’s a little more information for you. While I can’t say that these are English language movie theatres, you can certainly check it out on your own.

One last thing. If you’re super keen on making the experience extremely easy… Maxime Ménard has provided us all with a fantastic link. Already filtered to OmU and OV films. All Düsseldorf Theatres included in the search. Here you go:

NOTE: If you are streaming content or using your electronic devices in public spaces, please make sure to get yourself a VPN before doing so. I was hacked recently, and the extra couple Euros it costs per month (not even) for a VPN is definitely worth the hassle I went through.

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
