Looking for an eco-friendly, culture-packed weekend getaway from Düsseldorf? Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is definitely worth checking out and we have Gemma from Everything Edinburgh here to tell us more!

Easily accessible via a short flight from Düsseldorf Airport to Edinburgh Airport, you’ll be able to explore this charming city known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and friendly locals.

This was our family trip to Edinburgh back in July 2024 💛 it was beautiful!

Ready to go green in Scotland’s enchanting capital? Let’s ask Gemma about all you need to know for a perfect weekend retreat!

What are 5 things to do in Edinburgh that are sustainable?

1️⃣ Visit attractions by foot, which is relatively easy as the Old Town and New Town are well connected, although there are many hills, so it might only be feasible for some travelers.

2️⃣ Ditch the car. Most Scottish cities have Low-Emission Zones, and parking in the city center is a nightmare anyway.

3️⃣ Support independent businesses such as coffee shops, cafes, restaurants, tours, and shops.

4️⃣ Stay in a family-owned bed and breakfast over a chain hotel if that fits your travel needs; B&Bs are great as you get a hearty Scottish breakfast and an overnight stay!

5️⃣ Shop local (more tips in the next answer)

Are there any locally produced souvenirs worth buying in Edinburgh?

Definitely! Check out the Scottish Design Exchange and The Leith Collective for souvenirs or independent shops around the West End, Leith, and Stockbridge. Armstrongs is great for vintage finds, too, so you can pick up some pre-loved tartan items.

Are there any local customs in Scotland that travelers should know and respect?

✅ Scottish people are very sarcastic. They may make fun of you, but it is (usually) playful.

❎ We don’t really do kissing on the cheeks.

✅ Historically, visitors rubbed Greyfriars Bobby’s nose, but it lost its coloring, so they are now asked to take a photo instead to save this landmark.

Can you give us a few helpful words to get by in Edinburgh?

➡️ Ken means ‘know’ – although this may lean more towards Fife than Edinburgh Hen is a term used for a woman

➡️ Scoobie means clue (as in I don’t have a scoobie, I don’t have a clue)

➡️ Jobby is a poo(p)

⚠️ If you say “fanny pack” to a Scot, they’ll laugh

Are there any other local tips or tricks worth sharing?

Go to Leith! This area of Edinburgh feels like its own wee (small) village. There are nice bars, restaurants, shops, and walks. If it’s sunny (boom boom!) check out Portobello Beach!
