One thing I find extremely unique about Düsseldorf is the combination of city life as well as outdoor spaces. With Düsseldorf being located right along the Rhine River, almost all parts of the city have a beautiful view, especially when the sun starts to set. I know I’m not the first person to tell you how beautiful Düsseldorf is by night!

With a passion for photography, I have done a fair bit of sunset chasing myself in hopes of getting that perfect pink sky shot. Now it’s time to share my secret sunset spots with you! So grab some craft beers and get out there!

So where are the best spots to watch the sun sink into the horizon in Düsseldorf?

Galerie Burghof

(Burgallee 1, 40489 Düsseldorf)

If you are not one to enjoy the busy city life as much, the outer edges of Düsseldorf in Kaiserswerth are the perfect mix between the city and a small village feel. Situated right on the Rhine River, with an array of restaurants to choose from, there’s always something to keep everyone busy. Galerie Burghof is a Biergarten that overlooks the river. It becomes extremely popular over sunset time and it is a common procedure to sit outside looking right into the sun as it disappears into the horizon. Here’s a sneak peek into the Kaiserswerth area to give you a better idea of its charm.

Kaiserpfalz

(Burgallee, 40489 Düsseldorf).

Another option in the centre of Kaiserswerth is Kaiserpfalz. A ruined castle from the 12th century, allowing one to explore around what is left of the castle while having a spectacular view of the sun setting over the Rhine river. It’s also included in Life in Düsseldorf’s featured post “10 of the Best Things to Do with Kids in Kaiserswerth“.

Rheinuferpromenade

(Untere, Rheinwerft, 40213 Düsseldorf)

If the city life appeals more to you, then downtown Düsseldorf is the perfect place to be. The Rheinuferpromenade is accessible right from the Altstadt in Düsseldorf. The Rheinuferpromenade runs all along the river for 1.5 kilometers, allowing for enough space for everyone. Lined with plenty of restaurants and food carts there is enough to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. The Rheinuferpromenade is a lot more city-like with a few more people and the hustle and bustle of a city.

Rheinpark Golzheim

40213 Düsseldorf

For a more family-friendly option, Rheinpark Golzheim is about a 20-minute walk from the Altstadt, but also very accessible with the U79 tram line (Golzheimer Platz or Kennedydamm stop). The Rheinpark is a huge park open to the public right on the edge of the river. The park is very family-friendly, especially for young children. Playgrounds are dotted all over the park and it offers the perfect location for a family picnic to watch the sun sink into the horizon over the river.

MedienHafen

Am Handelshafen 21, 40221 Düsseldorf

Düsseldorfs MedienHafen is known for its abstract architecture. The MedienHafen is easily accessible as it is not too far from the city centre. Weekends in the MedienHafen are a little less busy compared to the Altstadt, offering up the perfect place to wander around while taking in the beautiful scenery as well as the very interesting buildings surrounding you.

Medienhafen Sunset

Brücke Im MedienHafen

(Am Handelshafen 15, 40221 Düsseldorf)

The perfect spot to get 360° views is the Brücke Im MedienHafen (bridge in the Media Harbour). Located right in the MedienHafen (Am Handelshafen 15, 40221 Düsseldorf), the bridge is the perfect spot to view the Gehry buildings. The Frank O’ Gehry buildings have been built in an extremely futuristic architectural way, which provides some exquisite photo opportunities. The MedienHafen gives a beautiful view of the sunset over the river, as well as the Altstadt all in one.

Rhine Tower in Düsseldorf

Stromstraße 20, 40221 Düsseldorf

Any view is made much better with a bit of height. The Rhine Tower in Düsseldorf is about 240 meters high. With that height, any sunset will look amazing. The Rhine tower provides a 360° view over the city of Düsseldorf. During sunset, one can get a rather exceptional view of the city of Düsseldorf, and its location with the river running right next to it. With such height, you are even able to see Meerbusch and Oberkasel, the town on the other side of the river.

Aschloksken

(Am Damm, 47259 Duisburg)

Even further out of the city towards Duisburg, on the very outskirts of Düsseldorf is Aschloksken. Situated right on the Rheinuferweg, is a small, rustic-looking Biergarten. The common procedure at Aschloksken is to take advantage of the extremely cheap refreshments, then to carry a chair to the Rheinuferweg to get the perfect view of the sunset over the river with the skyline of Duisburg in the background. In the summer months, it is fascinating to see how popular the small little Biergarten becomes just because of its amazing view.

And more!

If you’re keen on digging deeper and scouting out even more of the cities most beautiful locations to watch a sunset, here are a few more:

  • KIT: Close to the Rheinpromenade is the Kunst im Tunnel (KIT) which offers cold drinks and a beautiful little field to watch the sunset.
  • Tonhallen-Terrasse: Despite its central location, many people still don’t know how amazing the Tonhallen-Terrasse is. Here, you can get ice-cold cocktails, and sit back in a recliner while enjoying the sunset along the Rhine.

  • Paradiesstrand: What more can you ask for? Water, beach, sunset? I’m in!

  • Hamm: The neighborhood of Hamm is situated along the edge of the Rhine River with many sandy beach areas to sit and enjoy the sunset.
  • Fortuna Büdchen: This is a classic for many Düsseldorfers! Grab a cold beer from the Büdchen, and sit along the stone wall along the Rhine for some spectacular views.

  • Pebble’s Terrasse: In the Media Harbour, by the silver pebble – similar views as the Media Harbour Bridge.

  • The Paris Club at 25 Hours Das Tour: The Paris Club offers some killer aerial views of the city, add a sunset to that, and some cold drinks, and it’s one of the best places to be every evening!

Düsseldorf may not be a huge city compared to others around the world, but there are still so many places to see. Düsseldorf is a very unique city, with a mix of old and modern. It is also the fashion capital of North-Rhine-Westfalen, resulting in a very exclusive and modern city centre. The location of the city provides some incredible sunset spots to get that perfect golden hour shot or to just relax and take in the amazing views. So take advantage of the summer months and chase the sunset to experience some really breathtaking views.

👋 Hey, I’m Jenna!

The voice behind Life in Düsseldorf

I’m a German Canadian who moved to Düsseldorf over a decade ago, and like many of you, I had a million questions when I arrived. From trying to figure out how health insurance works in Germany to wondering where the best bakery is (spoiler: it’s Bülle 🍞), I’ve been through it all.

So I created Life in Düsseldorf to help make your transition smoother — whether you’re moving to Germany, already living here, or just curious about life abroad. My mission? To make you feel a little less overwhelmed and a lot more at home.
