The excitement of the arrival of FlixTrain in Düsseldorf is only that exciting when you’ve finally discovered all the benefits to using the FlixTrain over other alternative modes of transportation like buses, DB trains, carpooling, and planes.

So, in order to get you up to speed as to what the big hype is all about, we decided to put together a little review post that would give you enough information to make a wise decision the next time you book a mode of transportation around Germany.

FlixTrain is different than alternative modes of transportation, so you can’t focus all your time on comparing and contrasting.

What are the FlixTrain routes?

There are 4 different FlixTrain routes at the moment:

  1. Aachen to Hamburg (and back)
  2. Aachen to Berlin (and back)
  3. Stuttgart to Berlin (and back)
  4. Berlin to Leipzig (and back)

So for us, living in Düsseldorf, it is possible to train from Düsseldorf for super cheap with FlixTrain to one of the following cities:

  • Aachen
  • Cologne
  • Essen
  • Duisburg
  • Gelsenkirchen
  • Münster
  • Osnabrück
  • Hamburg
  • Dortmund
  • Bielefeld
  • Hannover
  • Berlin

The way I look at it is that I’ve just scored 12 new cities that make affordable weekend getaway destinations! Woohoo!

What makes FlixTrain different?

FlixTrain is fast

FlixTrain isn’t like FlixBus where you’re saving money but paying for it in time. It is a train, which means while it’s no ICE train (it is between Aachen and Hamburg though), the FlixTrain will get you from point A to point B much quicker than a bus or perhaps even a car.

FlixTrain is affordable

For train prices, FlixTrain is absurdly affordable. I’ve never found a train (even a regional train) that would take me somewhere for as little as 3,99 Euro. However, FlixTrain is different than Deutsche Bahn and they both have pros and cons. While FlixTrain might be cheaper, you only have the option to select a journey from 4 different tracks. While Deutsche Bahn might be more expensive, you can pretty much get anywhere in Germany via the use of a Deutsche Bahn train.

FlixTrain is convenient

FlixTrain, for me, is extremely convenient. And while convenience means something entirely different to us all, it’s important to note why their services work for me.

  • There’s  free wifi on board
  • There are electrical plugs
  • There are seat reservation options
  • There’s a snack bar
  • It’s cheap

However, if convenient for you means having that perfectly timed connection, then you’ll need to pay more to take a flight or a DB train. FlixTrain is convenient, but only if you are flexible.

FlixTrain is that perfect median between booking an expensive DB train ticket and a FlixBus (that takes a long time to get from point A to B) ticket

Are there any special FlixTrain offers?

My guess is that you didn’t even need a special offer to convince you to try out FlixTrain to explore one of the connecting cities along the Düsseldorf lines, but if you would like to check out their specials and sales going on, they are often running seasonal sales on their website.

If you’ve taken a FlixTrain before too, we’d love to hear your personal experience! Leave a comment below so that others can learn from your experiences.
