After a recent article was published on RP-Online about the Düsseldorf festival committee wanting to build a swimming pool along the Rhine River, there’s no doubt that it raised some interest by locals.
I spent a solid 15 minutes trying to decode the message from German to English before realizing it was a neat thing to share with the expats and English speakers of Düsseldorf.

The city has plans in place to build this swimming pool ship in the Media Harbour by 2017. Apparently there were attempts to build a similar project 10 years back by the Green Party, but nothing came of the idea. This year, there are conversations between the city coucil (Office of Economic Development), Open Source Festival and New Fall Festival about finally putting the plans to action.
If anyone has ever been to the Badeschiff in Berlin, you’ll know very well that this is quite a gem for the city dwellers and international travellers stopping by for a visit. There’s certainly no denying that this project is quite unique. However, the success of the swimming pool itself doesn’t carry much potential, but it is the concerts and outdoor events held in the space that keep the wheels in motion.
While they might have convinced the political parties and the Office for Economic Development, it seems they’re still months away from really solidifying the project. There are other matters that need to be discussed such as the fact that the Rhine River is a major highway for international shipping or the various conservation projects.
What do you think about a Düsseldorf swimming pool/boat along the Rhine River? I’d love to hear your pros and cons about the build!
